A major role of the Progress Council is to work directly with area firms on technical, financial, and site location issues. The Progress Council's Rostraver AirPark project has been a major asset in providing sites for the location and growth of firms in the Mid Mon Valley. The sale of a 2.77-acre parcel marked the sale of the last lot in the 16-acre industrial park. The buyer, Solar Power Industries, will use the site to expand their plant based in the industrial park. SPI anticipates that the expansion of their solar cell manufacturing operations will increase their number of employees from 126 to 200 within two years. SPI's expansion plans are intended to meet the exponential growth in the solar cell industry.
An August 10 ground breaking on two, 30,000-square-foot flex-buildings at Rostraver AirPark by General Industries/Vale Vista Associates marked another major milestone for the industrial park and the Mid Mon Valley region. The combined square footage of 60,000 will represent the largest concentration of flex-building space ever developed in the Mid Mon Valley. This type of private investment is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of General Industries' president Don Ivill and an indication of the positive direction of our local economy.
The Progress Council also assisted SAR Plastics Inc. to secure research funds through Innovation Works', Innovation Adoption Grant fund (IAG). SAR was awarded a $50,000 grant to help finance the company's work with the Plastics Manufacturing Center of Penn State University and the Plastics Technology Center of Penn State Behrend to improved its processes will help the company compete more effectively with low-cost foreign manufacturers, increase their customer base and grow manufacturing jobs. The Progress Council assisted SAR Plastics in securing the grant - the first IAG grant awarded to a Mid Mon Valley firm.
