A major role of the Progress Council is to work directly with area firms on technical, financial, and site location issues. The Progress Council’s Rostraver AirPark project has been a major asset in providing sites for the location and growth of firms in the Mid Mon Valley. The sale of a 2.77-acre parcel marked the sale of the last lot in the 16-acre industrial park. The buyer, Solar Power Industries, will use the site to expand their plant based in the industrial park. SPI anticipates that the expansion of their solar cell manufacturing operations will increase their number of employees from 126 to 200 within two years. SPI’s expansion plans are intended to meet the exponential growth in the solar cell industry. Learn more...
This past year the Progress Council continued its Smart Government Initiative. PA Futures was retained to work directly with staff on the first phase of efforts to promote cooperative efforts among local government. Mr. Alan Kugler, principle in PA Futures, is recognized statewide for his leadership in advancing governmental consolidations and mergers. Initial grants including a $10,000 CRP Grant through State Senator Stout and a $23,000 Shared Services Grant through the Department of Community and Economic Development supported consultant research efforts and meetings with local governmental officials. In 2007, efforts will focus on developing a demonstration project on cooperative services. Learn more...
The Mon Valley Progress Council was founded in 1965 by Mid Mon Valley business leaders who saw the need for regionally based actions to address the closure of the USS Donora Works and related economic challenges. In the ensuing years, the Council formed the Middle Monongahela Valley Industrial Development Association to redevelop Donora site, undertook a broad array of economic development initiatives and led regional efforts to advance the Mon Valley/Fayette Expressway and Southern Beltway projects.
